A Boot Disk on the Drive That Held the Work

He reached for the nearest drive at the worst moment. Rebuilding his laptop, he used his Seagate external — which held "some personal and work informaiton" — to "create a boot disk", and "unknown to me it seems to have overwritten all my data." Making a boot disk overwrites the front of the drive, not the whole of it — so the personal and work data very likely largely survives, and the priority is to stop using the drive so the recoverable remainder is not eroded by further writes.

The decode

Creating a boot disk replaces the front of the drive, not its whole surface. Making a bootable drive writes a new partition and the boot files onto it, reformatting the front of the drive — which replaced the structures describing his files and made the drive appear to hold only the boot disk. But this operation writes near the start of the drive and leaves the bulk of the capacity, where his personal and work data lived, physically untouched. The index was replaced; most of the data remains.

"Overwritten all my data" describes the appearance, not usually the reality. With the filesystem structures replaced, the drive looks empty of his files — but the file data itself sits intact across the majority of the drive behind the small boot-disk footprint. An empty-looking drive after boot-disk creation is a replaced index, not an erased surface, and that distinction is what makes a strong recovery realistic.

Recovery restores the organisation, which matters for work data. Because only the front was overwritten, the previous filesystem's structures often survive behind the new partition, and reading files through them returns them with their original names, dates and folders — important when the data includes work documents that need to be found and identified, not just recovered as a heap. Where structures did not survive, carving recovers the file data by type and each document is validated by opening it.

Stopping use is the decisive action now. The surviving data stays recoverable only until new writes land on it. If he set the drive aside after realising, the overwritten region is confined to the boot-disk footprint. Continuing to use it — or booting from it during the rebuild — would erode both the data and the surviving structures. The single most important step is to stop using the drive immediately.

The honest outcome is strong, with the boot-disk footprint the caveat. The data outside the small overwritten region is recoverable, and where structures survive, it returns organised. The genuine loss is confined to whatever sat exactly where the boot disk was written — a small fraction of the drive — reported by what is missing rather than found later. The realistic result is the great majority of his personal and work data, back with its folders.

Set the drive aside and have it imaged, and expect your folder structure back — which matters when work documents need to be found and identified.
