Apple iMac Data Recovery Swansea

The folder with the blinking question mark, the white screen that never moves on, the chime with nothing after it — an ailing iMac nearly always still holds its photos and documents intact. We recover the removable drives inside them, from plain SATA disks to both halves of a Fusion Drive.

Free diagnostic on every apple imac job. One fixed quote in writing before any work begins.

No fix, no fee all jobs except electronic and mechanical failures, chip level work, DVR and Forensic jobs. Full pricing is on the data recovery cost page.

// top 15 faults we recover from

The fifteen ways they fail

Every apple imac job starts by matching the symptoms to the fault — these fifteen cover almost everything that reaches the bench.

Question-mark folder

No bootable volume found — the internal drive has failed or corrupted.

Stuck at the Apple logo

macOS begins loading and stalls, usually over a dying drive reading at a crawl.

Fusion Drive desync

The SSD and HDD halves fall out of step and the joint volume dissolves — both are imaged, then rejoined.

Clicking behind the glass

The 3.5-inch drive inside an older iMac fails like any other; it just lives behind a bonded screen.

White / grey screen hangs

Storage or firmware trouble at boot — data comes first, diagnosis second.

Update abandoned halfway

A macOS update that died mid-flight loops the Mac; user data sits unharmed beneath.

APFS / HFS+ corruption

Apple's file systems fail in Apple-specific ways and are rebuilt with native parsers.

Disk Utility misfire

One wrong Erase in Recovery Mode — recoverable as long as nothing further writes.

2011 Seagate batch drives

The 1TB Seagates fitted to 2009–2011 iMacs fail early and often — donor stock for them is permanent.

Surge through the PSU

Logic board and PSU die together while the removable drive inside stays healthy.

Fusion SSD-half failure

The blade half of a Fusion pair usually dies first, stranding the volume — imaged and logically rejoined.

FileVault volume, key known

Encrypted APFS unlocks with your password and rebuilds normally — send the credentials along.

Slow death and beachballs

A crawling iMac is usually a drive failing by degrees; image it now, before the crawl becomes silence.

DIY opening casualties

Screens levered off at home nick SATA and power cables — the drive itself usually survives the surgery.

Target Disk Mode dead ends

When Target Disk Mode won't mount a failing volume, drive-out imaging is the safe alternative.

Apple storage, handled the Apple way

An iMac hides its storage behind a glued-on display — releasing the screen is delicate work, which is why we ask for the drive rather than the computer. We don't offer drive removal, so the disk (or both parts of a Fusion pair) needs to come out at your end; call us and we'll talk you through it, or a local repair shop will do it cheaply. Once here, HFS+ and APFS volumes are parsed natively, clicking Apple-badged hard drives get clean-bench head work, and Fusion Drives get their SSD and HDD halves imaged separately then logically stitched back together — the only way their files exist again.

What we take on — and what we can't

The recoverable iMacs are the ones whose storage unplugs: the 3.5-inch SATA drives of 2009–2011, the drive-plus-blade combinations of the Fusion years. T2-protected Intel models and every Apple Silicon iMac solder the SSD to the logic board and encrypt it in hardware — data welded to one specific board. We ended board-level work on soldered Mac storage two years ago; the success rate never justified the promise. Unsure of your model year? One phone call sorts it before anything is posted.

// the equipment we use

A professional lab, not software guesswork

iMac recovery is Apple-specific from the first adapter onwards:

Fusion Drive rebuild rig

Both halves of a posted Fusion pair are imaged and logically rejoined, then the APFS or HFS+ volume rebuilt into files.

Apple storage adapter set

Proprietary blades, Fusion pairs and plain SATA drives all connect natively to the imaging rigs.

PC-3000 + clean bench

An iMac hard drive that failed mechanically goes through the identical head-swap and firmware workflow as every other disk here.

APFS / HFS+ reconstruction software

Native parsing for Apple's file systems, Fusion logical-volume reassembly included.

FileVault / APFS handling

FileVault-encrypted volumes on removable drives unlock with your password and rebuild to files.

Erased-volume recovery

A volume lost to a Disk Utility misclick or a broken update comes back by carving — provided its freed space hasn't been reused.

What each era holds inside

Removable storage is the whole story: SATA drives and Fusion pairs are recovered, while T2 and Apple Silicon iMacs — SSD soldered and encrypted on the logic board — are the ones we must decline. The 1TB Seagate batch in 2009–2011 machines remains the era's serial failure, and matched donors for it never leave the shelf.

// getting your device to us

Post or courier your device — it's simple

Most customers post or courier their media to us.

Sending a drive from a computer, laptop, MacBook, iMac, CCTV / DVR or server? Please remove the internal hard drive or SSD and send us just the drive — we don't provide an internal drive-removal service. We don't recover storage soldered to a motherboard (e.g. Apple Silicon Macs and some thin laptops) — only drives that can be removed and sent to us.

  • Wrap the device in bubble wrap or a padded envelope — no need to include cables or power supplies.
  • Print and enclose the booking-in & shipping form (PDF) with your name, phone number and a brief description of what happened.
  • Send by Royal Mail Special Delivery or any tracked courier for full insurance in transit.
  • Prefer to hand it over in person? You can drop it in at reception at the address shown, Mon–Fri 9:00am–5:30pm.

// apple imac recovery questions

Common questions

The Mac searched for a bootable volume and found nothing — nine times out of ten a failing internal drive. Repeated restarts punish that drive, so shut it down and leave it down; the data itself is normally recoverable.
Yes, and it's a lab speciality. Apple fused a small SSD and a big hard drive into one logical volume, so losing either half collapses the lot. Both devices are imaged independently, the pairing is rebuilt in software, and the files are lifted from the reconstructed whole.
No — the bare drive does. It lives behind the display, so the screen must come off to reach it; we don't provide removal, but any competent repair shop can do the extraction, or call 0800 689 0668 and we'll advise. Remember T2 and Apple Silicon iMacs can't be recovered at all — their storage is soldered.
Unfortunately no. From the T2 era onward the SSD is soldered down and hardware-encrypted, tying the data permanently to that logic board, and we withdrew from soldered-storage recovery two years ago because results were too poor to sell honestly. Earlier iMacs with removable drives or Fusion pairs are fully recoverable.
