Those part numbers aren't decoration — they're the drives genuinely on this bench most weeks, and several carry famous flaws: the ST3000DM001 became a byword for head-stack failure, DM-series Barracudas lock at 'busy' with firmware faults, and WD Blues lose boards to surges and heads to knocks. Matched donors for all of the above are held in stock, and twenty-year-old IDE disks still read fine on the legacy shelf.

Western Digital hard drive recovery

Blue in the family tower, Black under the gamer's desk, Red in the NAS bays, Purple behind the cameras — WD's colour code walks through this lab weekly, and the WD10EZEX Blue may be the single most-imaged drive in the building. WD's characteristic slow fault is a service area silted up with relocation records, leaving a drive detected but glacial; that's untangled in manufacturer service mode, after which the platters image normally. The DM-generation Barracudas — ST2000DM008s and, notoriously, the head-hungry ST3000DM001 — bring two signature states: firmware lock-ups where a mechanically healthy drive hangs at 'busy' or declares zero capacity, unpicked through the diagnostic port with the casing never opened; and post-knock clicking, which means donor head work in the clean bench before imaging. Both are everyday jobs here with strong outcomes.

Hitachi data recovery

Deskstar and Travelstar drives have worn three badges — IBM's, Hitachi's from 2003, then HGST's under Western Digital — and every era still surfaces from South Wales lofts and office clear-outs. Their habit is the slowly tiring head stack: one surface starts erroring ahead of the rest until the drive ticks instead of mounting. We image surface by surface, banking what the strong heads can reach before a donor stack goes in for whatever the weak head abandoned — the HTS541010A9E680 Travelstar being the most familiar patient.

IBM hard drive recovery

Deskstar and Travelstar were IBM lines until the 2003 handover to Hitachi, and IDE-era stock keeps surfacing — out of retired towers and laptops kept in lofts, carrying the sole remaining copy of old accounts and photo albums. Twenty years in a box seizes spindles, stiffens lubricant and glues heads to platter surfaces, which is why such drives are opened in the clean bench before they are ever powered at all. PATA adapters and period donor parts live on the legacy shelf, so an IBM badge on its own never writes the data off.

Sending it in — the drive must be removed first

The drive needs to be removed from your computer before you send it in to us. Unsure? Phone us on 0800 689 0668, or a local PC repair shop will remove it for a small fee.

If the failed drive is still inside a PC, laptop or server, it needs to come out before anything is posted — we work on bare drives only and don't offer a removal service. A few screws does it on most machines, and any local repair shop will oblige cheaply. One boundary to remember: storage soldered to a motherboard is the thing we can't recover.

Most customers post or courier their media to us.

Sending a drive from a computer, laptop, MacBook, iMac, CCTV / DVR or server? Please remove the internal hard drive or SSD and send us just the drive — we don't provide an internal drive-removal service. We don't recover storage soldered to a motherboard (e.g. Apple Silicon Macs and some thin laptops) — only drives that can be removed and sent to us.

  • Wrap the device in bubble wrap or a padded envelope — no need to include cables or power supplies.
  • Print and enclose the booking-in & shipping form (PDF) with your name, phone number and a brief description of what happened.
  • Send by Royal Mail Special Delivery or any tracked courier for full insurance in transit.

The cure is a matched donor head stack fitted under filtered air, followed by patient sector-by-sector imaging — but only if the platters aren't ground down first, so leave the drive switched off from now on.
