I Opened It and Blew the Dust Away

He was resourceful and candid, and the candour matters. His Seagate had "no operating system found errors", then stopped booting and gave "a repetitive sound for around a minute then stops" — the drive spins. He "carefully removed the cover", found the heads parked, then "noticed large particles on the platen, which I carefully blew away (they may still be inside)", with smaller dust remaining, before replacing the cover. Opening a drive in open air and blowing across the platter introduces contamination that can score the surface — the honest position now is damage control, cleaning what was let in and assessing the platters before any read is attempted.

His instinct to investigate was understandable, but opening a drive is where the risk entered. Hard drives are assembled in filtered clean-room conditions and sealed, because the heads fly microscopically close to the platter and any particle on the surface is an obstacle in their path. Opening the drive in an ordinary room lets airborne dust settle on the platter — and blowing across it, however carefully, can drive particles onto the surface and stir up more. The candour about "they may still be inside" is exactly right, and it defines the current problem.

Contamination on a platter is dangerous because of how heads work. When the drive spins and the heads move to read, any particle on the surface can be struck by a head, scratching the platter and damaging the head — and a single scratch can spread as debris is thrown off. This is why blowing dust off and re-powering a drive is one of the more damaging things that can be done: the very act of running it turns settled particles into abrasives. The drive must not be spun again until it has been cleaned under proper conditions.

The original fault is separate from the contamination, and both are addressed. Before it was opened, the drive had a genuine fault — the repetitive sound and boot failure suggest a head or firmware problem. That original fault still needs diagnosing and fixing. The contamination is a second issue layered on top by the home investigation. Recovery has to handle both: decontaminate and assess the platters, then address whatever caused the drive to fail in the first place.

Clean-air decontamination and inspection come first, and they set the outlook. In the laboratory the drive is opened in laminar-flow clean air, the platters and heads inspected under magnification for particles and any scoring the exposure may already have caused, and the surfaces cleaned under controlled conditions where safe. Whether the platters escaped scratching — from the blowing, or from any brief spinning since — is the key question, established before any read.

The honest prognosis depends on the platters, and is stated plainly. If the surfaces escaped scoring and the original fault is a standard head or firmware problem, decontamination plus a proper repair returns the data. If particles already scored the platters, recovery narrows to the intact regions, and if the scoring is severe the outcome is limited — a real risk given the exposure, assessed under magnification and stated before any charge. The lesson travels honestly: a sealed drive should stay sealed, and opening it is best left to clean-air facilities.
