The Light Comes On, but It Never Tries to Spin

Their G-Tech external died between one use and the next, with a telling silence. "The light comes on so power is getting to the unit, but there is no sound of it even trying to spin up" — and it happened fast, "only a matter of hours between being used and being plugged in again." On the Mac-formatted 3TB drive: project files, video, audio and graphics, around 3TB. Power reaching the unit with no attempt to spin means the motor is getting power but the mechanism isn't turning — either a seized spindle or stuck heads on the mechanical side, or a power fault that lights the enclosure but never reaches the motor properly. Both need the drive left alone until assessed.

The decode

The light coming on tells you less than it seems, and the silence tells you more. A lit indicator means power is reaching the enclosure — but the enclosure and the drive's motor are different things. Total silence, no sound of the platters even trying to spin, means the motor is not turning. So the question is whether the motor is getting no proper power, or is getting power but physically cannot turn. The light confirms the enclosure has power; it says nothing about the mechanism.

Two families of fault produce this, and they are told apart under controlled power. One is mechanical — a seized spindle bearing, or heads stuck to the platters, either of which physically prevents rotation. The other is electrical — a PCB or bridge power fault that lights the enclosure but does not drive the motor. Profiling the drive's current draw on a bench supply distinguishes them: a seized motor draws heavily trying to turn, while a power fault leaves the motor drawing nothing. That measurement is the first diagnostic step.

If the mechanism is stuck, continued power attempts are the risk. Should the heads be stuck to the platters, each attempt to power and spin risks dragging them across the surface; a seized spindle under repeated power draws heavy current and heats. The protective step is to stop reconnecting the drive and let it see only current-limited, monitored power in the laboratory, where the fault can be identified before anything is forced.

Both fault families are recoverable, which frames the outlook. A seized spindle is addressed by moving the platters to a donor mechanism; stuck heads are freed or replaced — both clean-air work with a known shape. A PCB or bridge power fault is board-level repair. Neither is exotic, and both leave the data intact provided the platters have not been marked by forced spin attempts.

The platters set the honest ceiling, and Mac formatting shapes the reading. If the mechanism failed but the surfaces are undamaged, addressing the fault restores reading and the 3TB of creative data comes back; if the platters were marked, recovery narrows to the intact regions, established by inspection and stated before the work. The volume is Mac-formatted, read from the image with Apple-aware tools, and the recovered data goes to reliable storage, this time backed up.

The no-spin fault identified and addressed, the drive read gently under control, and the creative data extracted. A drive with power but no spin-up sound at all

Stop reconnecting it — a lit light with total silence means power reaches the enclosure but the motor isn't turning, and if the heads are stuck, each attempt risks scoring the platters. Don't assume the light means the drive is fine; the enclosure and the mechanism are different. This needs bench diagnosis and, usually, clean-air work in a laboratory. Set it aside unpowered, and once recovered, back up the data — a drive that failed between uses gave no warning.
