Unreadable across three devices confirms the fault is the card, and her cross-checking was the right move. Trying the card in a PC and a Mac after the camera failed, and finding it unreadable everywhere, rules out the camera, the reader, and any single device as the cause. The card carries its fault with it — which means the problem is on the card, but importantly, it is a fault that makes the card unreadable, not necessarily one that has destroyed the photos.
Her refusal to initialize is the crucial instinct, and it is exactly right. The Mac prompts to initialize because it cannot read the card's filesystem — the same situation as a drive showing as RAW. Recovery works from an image, which protects the card and lets carving be thorough. The card is imaged under write-blocking before anything, so no attempt — including any accidental initialize — touches the original, and all rebuilding and carving happen on the copy. Where the filesystem structures can be rebuilt from their backup copies, the photos return organised; where they cannot, signature carving finds the images directly in the memory, since photos carry strong signatures and carve cleanly.
The honest prognosis is encouraging, stated plainly. A card unreadable across devices, with the initialize prompt refused and the card set aside, typically returns its photos in full. The one honest caveat is that if the card's memory itself was damaged by the fault, some images may not survive — established from the image, not assumed — with the recoverable photos confirmed before any charge.
